Road Trip: Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg Plan Trip to Promote Infrastructure

As reports surface about their allies clashing ahead of a 2024 Democratic primary fight. Democrats Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg are planning to travel together to North Carolina this week.

According to the White House, Harris, 57, will promote President Biden’s bipartisan $1.2 trillion infrastructure package. Whereas Buttigieg, 39, will be doing the same in Charlotte on Thursday.

Providing a clear demonstration of unity could help douse the perception of a growing rift among Democrats, but it could also exacerbate simmering discord among their camps.

Journalists noted the surprising matchup. The White House tweeted and retweeted New York Times editor Blake Hounshell in response to Beltway rumours about Pete versus Kamala.

“Ha! Nick Trainor, who was former President Donald Trump’s director of regional political operations in the White House, said on Twitter. “This is the White House version of ‘play nice back there, you two.’’

Even though Biden has said, he intends to run again in 2024. He’s already the oldest president at 79. Therefore, Democrats are preparing for a primary between Harris and Buttigieg.

The VP’s ally told CNN recently that many Harris supporters are upset that the West Wing gave Buttigieg, of European ancestry, more media support when he was criticized in the press than Harris.

Despite Kamala Harris spending almost a year taking the hits, the West Wing didn’t want to take them. The White House is robust in its defence of white men. The former Harris aide told CNN.

A recent Business Insider article reports that Harris’ allies believe she will face a challenge from Buttigieg if Biden gives her challenging assignments. Such as reducing illegal immigration from Central America.

According to Steve Phillips, a prominent Harris fundraiser, Harris will not need much persuading to run. But, he added, “The K-Hive is very passionate and devoted to Harris.”

Buttigieg recently made headlines for taking paternity leave amid a mounting supply-chain crisis at ports. At the same time, Harris has faced criticism over her work on the migrant crisis, including her initial hesitation to travel to the US-Mexico border.

Harris would be the first female president of the United States and the first chief executive of partial Asian descent. But she has a 28 per cent approval rating, 10 points below Biden, which makes her vulnerable to challengers. However, according to other polls, Harris’ popularity rates are even higher. Meanwhile, Buttigieg would be the first openly gay president since at least the Civil War.

Trump has openly teased a potential run for a second, non-consecutive term as a possible Democratic opponent in 2024.
