Numerous Open and Masters victories are among his many accolades, and he held the world’s top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings for a total of 97 weeks. Faldo joined CBS Sports in 2006 as the network’s lead golf analyst.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
A native of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire (in the United Kingdom), Nick Faldo was conceived on July 18, 1957. Jack Nicklaus’s performance in the 1971 Masters on his parents’ new colour television set sparked his interest in the sport at the age of 14. Faldo qualified for the English Amateur at Woodhall Spa three years later. The next year, in 1975,
he won his first two tournaments: the English Amateur at Royal Lytham and the British Youths Open Amateur Championship (now the British Amateur). For his achievements in golf, Faldo was offered a scholarship to attend the University of Houston. He only stayed for a few weeks before quitting to focus on his professional goals.
He became a member of the European Professional Golfers Association in 1976. In 1977, Faldo finished seventh in the Order of Merit, and in 1978, he finished third. The Ryder Cup in 1977 was also one of his victories on the European Tour in each of those years.
Further Professional Career
True to form in the early 1980s, Faldo won the Sun Alliance PGA Championships twice in a row in 1980 and 1981. In 1983, he won five times on the European Tour and finished first in the Order of Merit. True to form, Faldo became a consistent competitor at major tournaments. He won the Peugeot Spanish Open in May 1987 and the British Open two months later to earn his first major championship.
Two years later, in 1989, Faldo won his second major title at the Masters, which he successfully defended in 1990. First since Jack Nicklaus in 1965 and 1966, he won a second consecutive Masters title. In his next major, Faldo tied for third place at the US Open. It got even better for him when he won the British Open the following month for the second consecutive time. In 1992, Faldo won his third Open Championship crown.
The European Tour Order of Merit was awarded to him for the second time.With each passing decade of the 1990s, Faldo added to his impressive resume of victories. In 1993, he became the first man to win Carroll’s Irish Open three times in a row. In 1996, he won at Augusta National on the US PGA Tour after switching to that circuit. Faldo triumphed at the 1996 Masters, defeating Greg Norman in the final round.
His final tournament victory came at the Nissan Open in Los Angeles the following year. Faldo retired from competitive golf in 2001 after a last PGA Tour season marred by a steady decline in his game. Even though he played less regularly, he still managed to tie for fifth place at the 2002 US Open, a commendable accomplishment. After that, he finished tied for seventh at the 2003 British Open. Faldo continued to play in the Open Championships throughout 2015, but he was unable to advance past the second round on each occasion.
2008 Ryder Cup
Captaining the European Ryder Cup squad in 2008 was an honour bestowed upon Faldo because of his illustrious career as a Ryder Cup participant. The Cup was eventually won by Team USA, bringing an end to Team Europe’s winning streak.
Career as Commentator
ABC Sports hired Faldo as a PGA Tour analyst from 2004 to 2006. He collaborated with Mike Tirico, the show’s host, and Paul Azinger, a former playing opponent. He signed a deal with CBS to become the network’s lead golf analyst after this. His work on the Golf Channel’s coverage of professional golf was also expanded in 2007 to include commentary on the Open Championship, which he co-anchors with Tirico and Azinger.

Other Ventures
Faldo Design, a golf course architecture firm he founded in 1991, is one of his many businesses enterprises. Laguna Lang Co Golf Club, Chart Hills Golf Club, and Cottonwood Hills Golf Club are just a few of the courses that the company has designed or refurbished. Also in 2010, Faldo built a world-class golf course in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.
True to form, Faldo founded the Faldo Series in 1996, a charitable golf teaching programme that aims to open doors for young people throughout the world. The next year, he founded the Faldo Golf Institute, a training facility for golfers. Florida, New Jersey, California, and the United Kingdom are just few of the places where you’ll find this company. Among Faldo’s other business ventures is a partnership with Mercedes-Benz as an ambassador.
Personal Life and Honors
Melanie Rockall was Faldo’s first wife. When Rockall discovered that Faldo was having an affair with his manager’s secretary, they broke up for good five years later.. Following his marriage to the secretary Gill Bennett in 1986, Faldo has three children with her. In 1995, Faldo began an affair with golfing student Brenna Cepelak, which led to the dissolution of his marriage.

Faldo’s relationship with Valerie Bercher, a Swiss PR agent, ended in 1998. Furious with Faldo’s betrayal, Cepelak smashed his Porsche 959 with a golf club, causing an estimated $10,000 in damage. In 2001, Faldo married Bercher, with whom he had a daughter, Emma, who was born in 2003. In 2006, the couple divorced. Lindsay De Marco, Faldo’s fourth wife, was married in 2020.
Many accolades were bestowed on Faldo during his career as a result of his exceptional golfing prowess. His induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame took place in 1997. At the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2009, he was elevated to the rank of Knight Bachelor for his contributions to golf. In 2014, Faldo was awarded the Payne Stewart Award, as well.
