His mother is of Irish origin, and his father was of German and Irish descent. Edward Joseph Pence, Sr., his paternal grandfather, was a stockyard worker in Chicago. He was given the name Richard Michael Cawley in honor of his maternal grandfather, Richard Michael Cawley, who immigrated to America from Doocastle, County Mayo, Ireland, via Ellis Island and went on to work as a bus driver in Chicago, Illinois. The grandparents of his paternal grandmother were Irish natives from Doonbeg in County Clare.

Michael, Charlotte, and Audrey Pence are Mike and Karen Pence’s three children. First Lieutenant Michael Pence is a pilot in the US Marine Corps. When Congress was in session, Pence’s family resided in Arlington, Virginia; when it wasn’t, they were in Columbus, Indiana. In a 2002 interview, Pence said to a reporter that he would only eat dinner by himself with his wife.

Pence’s mother remarried on May 1, 2004, this time to Basil Coolidge Fritsch, who had been widowed since 2001. Greg Pence, Pence’s older brother, ran for and won the position of Indiana’s 6th congressional district representative in 2018. (the seat previously held by Mike).
