In January 2022, Medvedev made it to the Australian Open final two years in a row, losing Rafael Nadal in five sets. He then competed in the Mexican Open, where he was beaten by Nadal once again. Despite this, Medvedev defeated Djokovic in the quarterfinals of Dubai to claim the No. 1 spot in the world. After losing the Indian Wells Masters in March, he fell to No. 2.
