Are Nate And Jeremiah Divorce?
Having found not one but two “great loves,” Nate Berkus is overjoyed. The 50-year-old interior designer Nate Berkus and his 37-year-old husband Jeremiah Brent discussed their happy marriage in PEOPLE’s Love Issue.
Berkus was also forthright about how the loss of his companion, Argentine photographer Fernando Bengoechea, who perished in the Sri Lankan tsunami of 2004, had impacted his marriage to Brent. Berkus reflects on the lessons in love he has learned from his husband by saying:
“The most important thing I learned is that great love may come back again if you do the work on yourself that is necessary to make yourself receptive to great love,” she said, adding, “I have been very public about what I have survived.” Brent had never had a significant relationship before he met Berkus at the age of 26.
As a pleasant surprise, they hit it off right away on their first date back in 2012. Oh my God, what is this? is what I recall thinking. Says Brent, “This is not at all what I expected. Something about him gave me a sense of security that I had never experienced before. Berkus’s new beginning came as a complete shock.
When Berkus and Jeremiah first met, his mother informed him, “The light is back in your eyes.” And at that moment, I realised, Oh, now I see. It’s true what you said. I know.” Many of the former Oprah guest’s interviews have focused on Bengoechea and his role in both his and Brent’s lives. As an homage, he and Brent gave their 3-year-old son the name Oskar.

They have a 6-year-old daughter together named Poppy. In April of 2018, Berkus explained to PEOPLE that Fernando’s middle name, Oskar, was the inspiration for the touching design. The fact that the homage “was truly Jeremiah’s idea” is even more shocking. We will always remember the time we spent with Fernando.
Brent recalls, “He played a big role in the development of our romantic relationship. “It’s a pivotal moment in Nate’s backstory. And so it was thrilling to imagine that we could get a chance to honour his memory in such a meaningful way. Berkus was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey about the tsunami in 2005.
When the earthquake struck, he and Bengoechea were on holiday at Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka. They were forced to abandon their beach shack as the incoming tide swept them away. They managed to keep together despite the swift current. After the waves subsided, Bengoechea went missing and was never located.
The family issued a statement shortly after saying, “Despite all the information we have and the hard work of the search team, we still haven’t heard anything about Fernando. It’s tragic that we have to assume Fernando perished in the tsunami.
