Choong was the first British athlete to win the European under-16 modern pentathlon title in 2010. He was also a member of the British relay squad that won a bronze medal. In 2013, Choong won the GB Open and the British Junior Championships. In 2014, he successfully defended both titles, finishing ahead of Team Bath colleagues Joe Evans and Tom Toolis, who earned 1,468 and 1,446 points, respectively. Choong, Evans, and Toolis won the gold medal as a team.
He finished 16th at the 2014 World Modern Pentathlon Championships in Warsaw, Poland. He qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in the modern pentathlon after finishing seventh at the 2015 European Championships in Bath. Choong finished thirteenth at the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) world cup in Rio in March 2016, which functioned as a trial event for the Olympics. Choong set a career-high in a world cup event in April 2016, finishing fourth in Rome, five seconds behind the bronze medalist, Czech Republic’s Jan Kuf.
Choong made his Olympic debut in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. He entered the last event, the laser run, in second place, but a poor performance dropped him to tenth place.
