He resigned from the US Attorney’s Office in February 2000 to run for 7th Circuit Solicitor. In the Republican primary, he defeated incumbent Solicitor Holman Gossett; in the general election, he faced no opposition. Gowdy won re-election with no opposition in 2004 and 2008 as well. During his employment, he made four appearances on the television shows Forensic Files, Dateline NBC, and SCETV. Seven of the criminal cases he prosecuted involved the death penalty.
