Aegon Targaryen: With his three great dragons, Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes, King Aegon I Targaryen, also known as Aegon the Conqueror and Aegon the Dragon, united the realm of Westeros (except for Dorne and the territories beyond the Wall). He wed both Visenya and Rhaenys, his sisters.

Who Is Aegon Targaryen on “House of the Dragon”?

Prince Aegon Targaryen, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, is described as the “first-born son of King Viserys” in HBO’s official character description (played by Paddy Considine). However, his importance to the story’s development is greatly exaggerated in that portrayal.

All of this may be traced back to the history of the Targaryen family. In “Fire and Blood,” by George R.R. Martin, King Viserys marries twice, causing a struggle for the throne. His first wife was a princess from House Arryn named Queen Gemma. Princess Rhaenyra is the sole survivor of their union. After Aemma and their son—who would have been Viserys’ heir—both perish during childbirth, Viserys names Rhaenyra as his successor.

Episode 2 reveals that Viserys remarries Alicent Hightower (teen Emily Carey on “House of the Dragon”), and the couple has two boys; the eldest is named Aegon. He’s younger than his half-sister Rhaenyra by ten years in the book and even more so in the TV show. Even though he has male heirs, Viserys still plans for Rhaenyra to succeed him, which has angered his new queen and her supporters at court. This strategy will remain in effect till Viserys passes away.

Several allies of the Hightower party then decided to ignore Viserys’s desires and crown Prince Aegon as King Aegon II. Not until after Aegon’s coronation is Rhaenyra even told that her father has died. When Rhaenyra and Aegon, the rightful heirs to the Targaryen throne, discover that the crown has been “taken,” it sets in motion the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

HBO’s “House of the Dragon” cast list confirms that Glynn-Carney will play an older Aegon in the show’s first season. An infant Aegon made an appearance in the third episode. His character, played by Ty Tennant, first appears in episode six as a young teenager as the show skipped ahead in time.

Along with his nephews Jacaerys (Leo Hart) and Lucerys (Harvey Sadler), he pranks his younger brother Aemond in this episode (Leo Ashton). Alicent (Olivia Cooke), his mother, cautions that he must be faithful to his siblings above everything else and that they are not his friends.

Game of Thrones: Season 1

When Sansa visits the throne room at the Red Keep, she is given a lecture on history by Septa Mordane. It is said that Aegon the Conqueror created the Iron Throne and united the Seven Kingdoms under his rule.

Aegon’s invasion of Westeros and unification of six of the Seven Kingdoms (Dorne was not added to the realm until some time later) are discussed by Daenerys and Jorah Mormont in Vaes Dothrak. Jorah points out that Aegon never presented a formal claim for his conquest of most of Westeros and hence had no “title” to the Seven Kingdoms. Daenerys says that he was able to do it because of his dragons. Jorah doubts Aegon ever possessed dragons, implying that the events are so far in the past that knowing for sure is impossible.
