Pepa’s Original Power Was Nearly Ruined By Encanto’s “We Don’t Bring Up Bruno”

Pepa Encanto: In Disney’s Encanto, Pepa Madrigal once possessed a different talent, and that talent could have destroyed “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.” In Disney’s Encanto, Pepa Madrigal almost had a foreign power that could have put “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” in jeopardy.

The Family Madrigal receives various special forces in Encanto, which they employ to aid their small community. For instance, Pepa Madrigal (Carolina Gaitán) can modify the day’s mood and the weather.

Luisa (Jessica Darrow) can move buildings and lift donkeys above her head thanks to her incredible strength. Sadly, Stephanie Beatriz’s Mirabel Madrigal does not inherit any magical prowess, which makes her more eager to support her family when their magical home crumbles.

Following its December streaming debut on Disney+, Encanto attained a new level of popularity. So far, the movie’s soundtrack has spent five weeks at the top of Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart.

Additionally, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” spent three weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Encanto was nominated for three Oscars: Best Animated Film, Best Score, and Best Original Song. Before the 2022 Oscars, the movie will also be rereleased in theatres.

Disney’s Encanto saw significant changes as the plot came together, and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” would have been very different had Pepa Madrigal retained her original strength. The film’s creators provide many production-related insights in Disney’s Art of Encanto, and visual development designer Meg Park explains Pepa once possessed a different power.

According to Park, Pepa initially had the ability to be unbreakable and had a reckless side. The filmmakers ultimately settled on Pepa’s ability to manipulate the weather since they felt it was too close to Luisa’s skill. The action also appeared to salvage the movie’s catchiest song.

The well-known opening phrase of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” wouldn’t exist without Pepa Madrigal’s weather magic. Beginning the song, Pepa recalls her wedding day and how her brother Bruno’s (John Leguizamo) prophesy caused the day to turn into a hurricane.

Pepa’s opening line, “It was my wedding day,” in the song, helped the song gain extraordinary popularity by becoming posted, mocked, and shared on applications like Instagram and TikTok. But of course, without Pepa’s weather prowess and the beginning verses about rain on her wedding day, the song would sound entirely different.

Pepa’s power, after all, alters her entire demeanor. She is not a daredevil but a gossipy, eccentric aunt who enjoys performing outrageous theatrics and singing about her ability to manipulate the weather. And Pepa is to blame when nobody brings up Bruno.

Even without “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” Encanto’s soundtrack would still be booming. The Encanto soundtrack has spent several weeks in Billboard’s Top 200 albums, despite the song’s more tremendous success than the other songs.

And although it didn’t reach the same heights as “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” on the charts, “Dos Oruguitas” received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. Nevertheless, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” has Pepa Madrigal’s rainy wedding day to thank for reaching number one on the Hot 100.

Who Is Pepa Madrigal?

In Disney’s upcoming 2021 animated feature, Encanto, Pepa Madrigal plays a significant role. She is the middle child of Alma and Pedro Madrigal, and along with her husband Félix, she raised Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio. Pepa has a gift that permits her to manipulate the weather by being “overly passionate and emotional.”
