Law Career

Shortly after receiving her law degree, Kryst began working as an attorney with Poyner Spruill LLP, specializing in complicated civil litigation. She is currently licensed to practice in both North Carolina and South Carolina.

Along with her pro bono work for low-level drug offenders, she collaborated with Brittany K. Barnett of the Buried Alive Project to help liberate a client who had been given a life sentence. She was the originator of the fashion blog White Collar Glam, dedicated to assisting women to dress professionally in white-collar occupations.

Pageantry

As a young woman, Kryst began competing in beauty pageants, eventually winning the titles of “Miss Freshman” and “Miss Fort Mill High School.” Kryst returned to pageantry after an extended hiatus and made two bids to win the Miss North Carolina crown, landing in the top ten.

Miss USA 2019

Kryst competed for the title of Miss North Carolina USA 2017 in 2016 and ended up as the event’s fourth runner-up, behind winner Katie Coble. She competed again the following year, placing in the top ten, and ultimately won the title of Miss North Carolina USA 2019 while representing the city of Metrolina.

Since Caelynn Miller-Keyes, the previous titleholder, was filming season 23 of The Bachelor and thus unable to attend the coronation, Kaaviya Sambasivam, Miss North Carolina Teen USA 2018, crowned Miller-Keyes.

2019 marks the first time that all four major U.S.-based pageants were won by African heritage women, following South African Zozibini Tunzi as Miss Universe and American Nia Franklin as Miss America (as Miss Teen USA 2019). She was already in 2019’s Miss North Carolina USA before this.

Kryst was Miss USA. Therefore, she had to put her law career on hold for a year to focus on pageantry. She competed as a Miss USA representative and placed in the top 10 at the 2019 Miss Universe pageant on December 8. Kryst leaped to her death from the 29th floor of her apartment building, 350 West 42nd Street, a 60-story high-rise in Midtown Manhattan, on January 30, 2022. The coroner determined that she committed suicide on January 31.
