The Las Vegas Raiders entered the 2022 season a few months ago, hoping to build on their postseason run from the year before. The Silver and Black currently have a 2-6 record as we enter Week 10.

No way could things possibly be worse. Still, they did. Tight end Darren Waller was placed on the Injured Reserve list, according to a Thursday announcement from Las Vegas. Hunter Renfrow, a receiver, joined Waller shortly after the team made the information.

According to the Raiders’ injury report, Renfrow has rib and hamstring ailments, and as a result of being added to the I.R. list, he will be out for a minimum of four weeks.

The 26-year-old will be absent from not only Las Vegas’ upcoming game against the Indianapolis Colts but also the clashes with Denver, Seattle, and division rivals Los Angeles Chargers. Renfrow made the Pro Bowl the previous year, aiding the Silver and Black in their comeback from a 6-7 record to reach the playoffs.

The player selected by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft excelled in the 2021 season. But this season is very different—and not in a good way. Renfrow recorded 1,038 receiving yards and nine touchdowns by the end of the 2021 campaign.

The Pro Bowl receiver recorded a 1.6% drop rate and received an 80.6 rating from Pro Football Focus. After the Henry Ruggs tragedy, Renfrow’s situation took off since Derek Carr was forced to use Renfrow as his primary target because Pro Bowl teammate Darren Waller was injured.

Renfrow missed posting at least 30 receiving yards once after the bye week in Week 8—the week of the Ruggs tragedy. Renfrow, by contrast, has only gone over that same 30-yard barrier in 33% of the games he has played this season.

The former Clemson Tiger averaged 32 yards per game and had zero touchdowns before being placed on the Injured Reserve list. If Renfrow maintained his current rate and participated in all 17 games this season, this number would translate to 544 receiving yards at the end of the campaign.

The Raiders recovered Renfrow’s first fumble in the game against Arizona. Still, the 5’10” receiver fumbled on back-to-back plays in overtime, which led to Byron Murphy returning the second one for the game-winning score.

Renfrow signed a two-year, $32 million agreement this offseason, and Pro Football Focus has given him a rating of 60.3 for his performance this season — a 25% drop from 2021. You can guarantee neither party is pleased with how things have developed since.
