Rhule extended his contract with Temple for four years in July 2015, taking him to the 2021 campaign. This agreement was revised to keep Rhule at the university following his outstanding third season with the Owls. Syracuse and Mizzou were after him, but he decided to stay at Temple.

Rhule defeated his alma mater Penn State 27-10 on September 5, 2015, in front of 69,741 spectators, marking the Owls’ first victory against the Nittany Lions since 1941.

Rhule’s Temple team finished 10-2 during the regular season in his third season in charge, winning the American Athletic League’s East Division and competing in the inaugural conference championship game. The following year, he led the Owls to their second straight championship game, when they prevailed to claim their first conference title since 1967.

Baylor (2017–2019)

Rhule succeeded Jim Grobe as interim head coach of the football team at Baylor University on December 6, 2016. As a result of the Bears’ poor 1-11 record in 2017, Baylor would not be eligible for a bowl game for the first time since 2009.

Under Rhule’s direction, the Baylor Bears finished the regular season of 2019 with an 11-1 record but ultimately lost to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship game and Georgia in the Sugar Bowl. Rhule’s teams at Baylor never managed to defeat a team rated higher than them.

Carolina Panthers (2020–2022)

Rhule was hired on January 7, 2020, to take over as the Panthers’ fifth head coach. The Panther’s defense improved under Rhule’s leadership, moving from allowing the second-most points in 2019 to ranking #15 in the league.
