Celine Dion Diagnosed With Stiff Person Syndrome ‘A Very Rare Neurological Disorder’ Prevents Her From Singing Normally!
Following a “very uncommon neurological illness diagnosis,” singer Celine Dion revealed that she is delaying her spring 2023 performances and canceling eight of her scheduled concerts for next summer.
The 54-year-old French Canadian singer, best known for the hits “Because You Loved Me,” “My Heart Will Go On,” and “The Power of Love,” revealed on Thursday that she had “stiff-person syndrome” in two videos she shared on Instagram, one in English and one in French.
Celine Dion adds in the video, appearing genuinely moved, “I’ve always been an open book, and I wasn’t ready to say anything before, but I’m ready now.” It’s been incredibly challenging to face these obstacles and talk about what I’ve gone through because I’ve had health issues for a long time.
She said, “Recently, I was diagnosed with the stiff-person syndrome, an extremely unusual neurological condition that affects around one in a million people. While we’re still studying this uncommon ailment, we know it’s the reason for all the spasms I’ve been experiencing.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Syndrome and Stroke, the stiff-person syndrome is an uncommon neurological condition “having characteristics of an inflammatory disease.” According to the institution, the disease makes the body rigid and makes people more sensitive to touch, noise, and emotional distress, which can result in muscle spasms.
According to Celine Dion, these spasms have been interfering with “every area of my daily life, occasionally making it difficult for me to walk and preventing me from using my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.”
She said she “won’t be ready” to resume her European tour in February. Insisting that she “had no choice” but to put her health first, she expressed optimism that she is “on the road to recovery.”
Through July 2023, Dion was supposed to tour Europe, stopping in countries like the Czech Republic, Cyprus, London, Italy, and more. But those times have been postponed. She will now perform at fewer venues throughout the spring of 2024; the dates and locations will be posted on her website.
I’m working hard with my sports medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and my ability to perform again, she said, adding, “I have a terrific team of doctors working with me to help me get better, and my darling children who are supporting me and giving me hope.” It’s been difficult, though, because all I know how to do is sing; it’s what I’ve done my entire life and what I love most.
