Celine Dion Disease: She Reveals Has A Rare Neurological Syndrome

Celine Dion Disease: Céline Dion, a singer, revealed that she had been diagnosed with an illness that forced her to cancel and reschedule gigs over the past year.

The “My Heart Will Go On” singer revealed in a sad social media message on Wednesday that she had stiff-person syndrome. This rare and incurable neurological disorder causes severe muscle spasms and stiffening in the limbs.

“Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to,” Dion said in an emotional video posted on Instagram, which she published in both English and her native French.

Due to what she previously termed as “severe and persistent muscle spasms,” 54-year-old Dion has routinely delayed and canceled performances over the past year.

When the epidemic hit in 2020, Dion was in the middle of a protracted musical tour. It was ultimately supposed to resume in February with 50 additional events. However, eight have been canceled, and 23 have been moved until 2024.

“All I know is singing,” Dion said, growing emotional. “It’s what I’ve done all my life, and it’s what I love to do the most.”

Stiff-person syndrome is a neurological illness having characteristics of an autoimmune disease, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a branch of the National Institutes of Health.

Spasms and “fluctuating muscle rigidity” brought on by stimuli like loud noise, extreme cold, or quick movement are symptoms of the disease. Falls that could cause additional injuries can be exacerbated or caused by spasms.

“Abnormal postures, often hunched over and stiffened, are characteristic of the disorder. People with SPS can be too disabled to walk or move, or they are afraid to leave the house because street noises, such as the sound of a horn, can trigger spasms and falls,” the institute says.

Rarely occurs stiff-person syndrome. The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine claims it only affects “one or two in a million people.”

According to the NIH, researchers don’t fully understand the causes of the disorder, but they speculate that an autoimmune condition in the brain or spinal cord may be to blame. Antibodies directed against an enzyme that produces a crucial neurotransmitter in the brain are more prevalent in people with SPS.

Although the condition cannot be cured, experts claim that medication with muscle relaxants and anti-convulsants can help to lessen and manage symptoms.

Dion stated in her declaration that she is getting support from her three children and thinks she is on the road to recovery.

“I’m working hard with my sports medicine therapist every day to build back my strength and ability to perform every day,” she said. “But I have to admit it’s been a struggle.”

One of the greatest vocalists of all time is Dion. Her years-long residencies in Las Vegas have been among the most lucrative. She has sold more than 200 million records worldwide and had numerous singles hit No. 1 on Billboard charts, including “My Heart Will Go On,” “The Power Of Love,” and “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now.”

In 2023, the singer was slated to start a new residency at Resorts World Las Vegas. It’s unclear when that residence, which has been delayed numerous times since 2021, would begin.

In May, when “Love Again,” a romantic comedy starring Priyanka Chopra, is set for release, she will also make her acting debut. Please forward this to your friends if you find it interesting. Newswatchlist.com is the best place to find the latest and updated information about your favorite celebs.
