The bodies of a mother and her young son were discovered on Wednesday after a tornado of the powerful winter storm system sweeping the United States destroyed their home and tore through a rural town in northwest Louisiana. The tornado was one of a swarm of twisters that had been released.

First responders discovered the 8-year-old boy’s remains after the tornado hit late on Tuesday night in Keithville, Louisiana, a village of 300 people, in a forested area approximately half a mile (800 meters) from his home, the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office reported in a written statement.

The sheriff’s office reported that his mother’s body was found Wednesday at 2:30 a.m. under some debris just one street from the wrecked house. The extent of an adult male’s storm-related injuries remained uncertain when he was taken to a nearby hospital.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards released a statement via Twitter that read, “I am heartbroken to learn of the mother and child who were murdered in Southwest Caddo Parish due to one of many reported tornadoes.” “The families and those who were hurt or lost their homes have my sincere condolences.”

A total of 18 tornadoes were reported in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi overnight on Tuesday into Wednesday, inflicting more than two dozen injuries and destroying more than two dozen homes.

A tornado touched down near New Iberia, Louisiana, about 70 miles (113 km) southwest of Baton Rouge, according to police. At least one person was hurt, while numerous more were evacuated from the wreckage. The New Iberia police acknowledged on Facebook that multiple residences and a hospital were damaged.

Just before 1 p.m. central time on Twitter, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office announced that “we have received reports of a tornado that hit Killona” (2 p.m. ET). “Homes near Schoolhouse Road have suffered significant damage, according to responding deputies. Police officers are searching homes.”

Over the past two days, the massive winter storm has raced across the center of the United States, burying much of the Upper Plains and Midwest under drifting snow, closing schools, and impeding traffic.

The storm system has caused several flight delays and cancellations at airports throughout the area and threatened to bury regions of the East Coast with ice and snow into Thursday.
