Marion Woman Killed: On New Year’s Day in Wyandot County, a woman was brutally attacked and died. She was laid to rest on Monday.

Keris L. (Dilgard) Riebel, 22, Marion, was discovered dead inside the Dollar Tree shop on East Wyandot Avenue when police got on the scene last Sunday at about 4:25 p.m., according to a report from the Upper Sandusky Police Department. Officers were called to the store in response to an allegation that a male person had attacked a female employee, who later turned out to be Riebel, while “waving a machete around.”

Jordan and Riebel were newlywed on October 8, 2022, and they lived in Marion. She earned a human resources business management degree from Franklin University. In 2019, Riebel graduated from Wynford High School, according to a statement on the district’s Facebook page.

Monday at 11 a.m., Riebel’s funeral ceremony will be held at Marion’s Trinity Baptist Church. The church will be open for visitation on Sunday in the afternoon.

In her obituary, Riebel was remembered as someone who “had a deep affection for Our Lord. She adored the bible and dedicatedly read the scriptures every day. She always had a smile and was kind and caring to everyone she met. Her life was a reflection of her passion for the Lord. She will always be remembered.”

Riebel leaves behind her spouse, her parents, Benjamin and Shandell Dilgard of Nevada, and her sister and brother, who are also Nevada residents. In addition, she is left behind by her husband’s parents, sisters, and great-grandparents.

According to the post, Riebel’s family members have set up a GoFundMe account to solicit contributions for her funeral and other costs. Since the fund was started in the days after her passing, donations have surpassed $72,000. Raising $30,000 was the initial target.

Upper Sandusky resident Bethel M. Bekele, 27, was named the suspect. Not long after the altercation inside the store, police tracked him down in the 100 block of South Fifth Street in Upper Sandusky and detained him.

The Daily Chief-Union said that Bekele appeared in Upper Sandusky Municipal Court on Tuesday and was charged with murder, an unclassified felony that, if found guilty, carries a sentence of up to life in prison a fine of up to $15,000.

The assault on Riebel was captured on security camera, according to Upper Sandusky Police Chief Jared Lucas’s probable cause affidavit. The attack was “random, unexpected, and unprovoked,” according to the prosecution. The attack’s cause has not yet been made publically known.

According to online records from the Upper Sandusky Municipal Court, bail has not yet been set. At a hearing on Thursday in municipal court, Wyandot County Prosecutor Eric J. Figlewicz and Bekele’s court-appointed lawyer William F. Kluge jointly submitted a motion for a postponement of the bond hearing. On January 3, during Bekele’s first court appearance, Figlewicz asked the judge to refuse bail.

Bekele’s subsequent court date is set for January 11 at 2 p.m. Judge James M. Ruhlen of the Upper Sandusky Municipal Court will hear the arguments regarding bail during this proceeding.

Bekele is presently detained in Bowling Green’s Wood County Jail.
