David Lynch’s 1984 film adaptation of the 1965 book failed to take off for several reasons, including that it condensed a vastly comprehensive book into the time allotted for a single feature picture and that the target audience was starved for science fiction in the Star Wars mold.
Over the years, several attempts have been made, including a miniseries on the Sci-Fi Channel (before it became SyFy. Still, it wasn’t until Denis Villeneuve entered the picture that spectators saw a faithful adaptation of the book. The first person to try his hand at Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, Jon Spaihts, collaborated with Villeneuve on the screenplay for the movie.
The plot of the book Dune centers on the conflict over the desert planet Arrakis, home to the Fremen tribe and a race of enormous cosmic sandworms that generate mélange, a spice that is necessary for interstellar travel. The emperor deposes House Harkonnen, a ruthless autocracy, and replaces them with House Atreides as rulers of Arrakis.
Duke Leto Atreides is killed by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, who also drives his son Paul and his mother Jessica, a space witch known as a Bene Gesserit, from their home. They eventually join the Fremen in their quest to overthrow the harsh Harkonnen government and retake the world. If you find this interesting, please forward it to your friends.
