Mel Gibson Dropped From Mardi Gras Parade: A day after being confirmed as a guest, actor Mel Gibson has been removed from a Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans due to unnamed threats.

Due to unknown threats, Gibson will no longer take part in the Krewe of Endymion procession as co-grand marshal, according to the New Orleans-based CBS affiliate 4WWL on Sunday.

The Krewe of Endymion puts on an annual parade for Mardi Gras. Following Gibson’s selection as the co-grand marshal on Saturday, it informed 4WWL that it had received “substantial input,” including “threats that give us great anxiety.”

Mel Gibson won’t participate in our 2023 parade as a co-grand marshal. The group announced, “for the safety of our riders, special guests, and everyone who welcomes us on the streets.”

The statement continued, “We appreciate the city’s help in resolving the concerns that will enable us to showcase another fantastic parade this year along our route. We will continue our final preparations for the largest Carnival parade in the upcoming weeks.

The Anti-Defamation League criticized the inclusion of Gibson in the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans parade and the Greater New Orleans Rabbinic Council due to prior antisemitic, racist, and sexist remarks Gibson had made. Those same groups praised the organization for removing him.

Despite appearing in various movies throughout his career, Gibson has drawn criticism for several remarks he has made against women, Black people, and Jews. In one of his comments, he allegedly used the N-word in a rant directed at his ex-girlfriend.

The Jewish organizations claimed that despite the actor’s feeble attempts to retract his comments over the years, there was still much suffering associated with his name and significant wounds in the Jewish community due to those controversies. They added that these wounds might never completely heal.

They continued by saying that they hoped Endymion’s leaders understood why selecting Gibson had resulted in “hurt and disappointment” for the Jewish community and other underrepresented groups.
