Catholic Priest Burned to Death: In northwest Nigeria on Sunday, shooters shot and wounded a fellow priest and set him on fire, according to the police. This latest act of violence has people worried about security in front of a vote later this month.

On February 25, Nigerians will vote for a new president, but there are concerns that some places may not have elections due to kidnappings for ransom and killings by armed gangs in the north.

Shooters have previously targeted priests in the predominantly Muslim north; the reason for the most recent attack was not immediately apparent.

The home of Father Isaac Achi, of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, in the Paikoro local government area, was set on fire by armed individuals around 3 a.m., according to Wasiu Abiodun, a police spokesperson for Niger state.

While Father Collins, another priest at the residence, was shot and hurt as he attempted to flee, Father Achi was burned to death.

According to Abiodun, he is getting better at a nearby hospital.

“It’s a sad time right now. We are not all safe if a priest may be killed in such a way. To stop the escalating slaughter, vigorous measures must be taken because these terrorists have lost it, “declared Sani Bello, governor of Niger State.
