After a shooting early Sunday in Tuscaloosa, junior forward Darius Miles of Alabama was detained and charged with capital murder. Miles, 21, and Maryland resident Michael Lynn Davis, 20, are the other two suspects in the case.

In a statement, Alabama basketball announced that Miles is no longer a squad member and that his profile on the team’s website has been removed. Less than 24 hours after being told that an ankle injury would keep him out for the rest of the season, he was arrested on Sunday with no bond.

The statement from Alabama stated that the campus community’s safety and well-being were paramount to the university. “We express our sincere sympathies to the families and friends of the victims of the event that happened yesterday night near campus.

“We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency response teams, and we will continue to support the ongoing investigation fully,” the statement continued. “We were made aware of the recent charge against student-athlete Darius Miles; he has been removed from campus and is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team.”

Jamea Jonae Harris, age 23, was the shooting victim on Sunday. She was declared dead at the scene early on Sunday, according to AL.com.

According to AL.com, Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Capt. During a press conference on Sunday, Jack Kennedy said that it “appears at this point that the shooting was the result of a brief altercation that ensued between the victims and suspects after they encountered each other down the strip.” He stated that Miles and Davis were found and interviewed after being identified through video surveillance and inquiry conducted by speaking with witnesses. Kennedy claimed that one of the two suspects was shot, although it was not apparent which one.

Miles, a four-star talent according to the 247Sports rankings and a top-50 national prospect, committed to Alabama as a member of the 2020 class out of Washington, D.C. Over the past three seasons, he had 53 appearances and three starts while averaging 4.2 points and 2.3 rebounds. He played in six games this season due to an ankle ailment he sustained in the preseason, averaging 1.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 6.5 minutes per game.
