Priscilla Presley Divorce: In November of 1959, 24-year-old Elvis and 14-year-old Priscilla (then known as Beaulieus) met for the first time. They hitched the wedding on May 1, 1967, in Las Vegas and had a daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, on February 1, 1968.

Only after four years of marriage did Elvis and Priscilla finally split up in 1972. On October 9, 1973, they finalized their divorce, and until Elvis’s untimely death on August 16, 1977, they shared custody of their daughter, Lisa Marie. His age was given as 42.

Why did Priscilla Presley Divorce?

Elvis and Priscilla’s breakup was for mysterious reasons. When Priscilla was seven months along with their daughter Lisa Marie, Elvis asked her for a trial separation. They had been apart for a brief time before Lisa Marie’s birth. After the birth of Lisa Marie, Priscilla stated that Elvis no longer wanted to have sexual relations with her.

Although Elvis often reassured Priscilla that he was concerned for her safety, the singer had a hard time trusting women who had recently given birth, as Priscilla described in her 1986 biography, Elvis and Me: The True Story of the Love Between Priscilla Presley and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

After having a child, “he had said before we were married that he had never been able to make love to a woman who had had a child,” she wrote. Even though Elvis and Priscilla were married, his affair with Priscilla continued. Also, having an experience with the dance studio owner was Priscilla.

They rekindled their wedding vows in Hawaii a few years after their marriage had already begun to fail. In 1978, Priscilla told the magazine People, “My life was his life.” I felt like the problems I was having were relatively trivial.

Priscilla’s affair with Mike Stone, her karate instructor, continued for some time. Their relationship ended in 1972 when she dumped Elvis. After Elvis discovered their affair, he allegedly pondered having Mike killed by a hitman, as reported by Biography.com.

Elvis and Priscilla’s divorce was finalized on October 9, 1973. Leaving him wasn’t based on a lack of affection on my part. “He was the love of my life, but I had to discover about the world,” Priscilla said in an interview in 2016.

After their divorce, Priscilla and Elvis remained civil and shared custody of their daughter Lisa Marie. Priscilla Presley revealed that Elvis’s reliance on prescription drugs increased during their separation and divorce in the Elvis by the Presleys documentary.

She claimed that Elvis’ increasing need for medication resulted from his hectic touring schedule. “His inability to sleep, a longtime struggle,” Priscilla says in the film, “was dramatically exacerbated.”

He needed more and more drugs “to drive away his blues or just give him the endurance to make it through the day,” as one of his friends put it. In the documentary, Priscilla discusses how her attention was diverted away from “warning flags” of Elvis’ drug use because of her romance with Lisa Marie.

Since she was so concerned with protecting her and her young daughter, Priscilla said, “I may have missed some of the warning signs.” And we stayed together till the day we broke up.
