Tom Cruise's Advice To Todd Field

Tom Cruise’s Advice To Todd Field: In this interview, Todd Field discusses how Tom Cruise’s guidance helped him survive when he learned that Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax had purchased his first picture, In the Bedroom, at the Sundance Film Festival.

The field was concerned that he wouldn’t have any input editing his film because Weinstein was renowned for changing filmmakers’ views. The area discussed calling the Mission: Impossible actor in an interview with The New Yorker, who gave him some wise counsel.

“I was weeping in the bathroom,” Field recalled. “I called up Tom Cruise and said, ‘Something terrible has happened.’ He said, ‘This is how you’re going to play it. It’s going to take you six months, and you’ll beat him, but you have to do exactly what I’m going to tell you to do, step by step.’”

Field received advice from Cruise not to argue with Weinstein and to let him handle all the editing. He advised Field to hold off on releasing the original cut until it received negative reviews from audiences and then remind them of how brilliantly the movie performed at the film festival. In the Bedroom “grossed more than twenty-five times its budget and was nominated for five Oscars, including Best Picture,” proving that Cruise’s suggestion was successful.

Another highly regarded movie, Field’s most recent release Tár, won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Cate Blanchett. Although Field was nominated for Best Screenplay, Martin McDonagh‘s The Banshees of Inisherin won the honor.
