Jerome Tang’s outstanding coaching career attained another historic turning point in the U.S. At a news conference held in the Bramlage Coliseum on Thursday, March 24, Kansas State (K.S.) officially introduced Tang as the men’s head basketball coach.

The K-State Athletics, Inc. Board of Directors and President Richard Linton approved Tang’s 6-year contract, which he signed as the men’s basketball team’s 25th head coach in K.S. history.

He is just the fifth minority men’s head coach in school history, joining former baseball coach Dave Baker (1978–83), former football coach Ron Prince (2006–08), former men’s basketball coach Frank Martin (2007–12), and current women’s tennis coach Jordan Smith. He is the first Black men’s head basketball coach in school history (2018-present).

Tang is the first NCAA D1 Head Coach from Trinidad and Tobago. I’m an immigrant, Tang said in an interview with D. Scott Fritchen of K.S. Sports Extra.

My beautiful parents, hard-working individuals, moved here after I was born, and I was born in Trinidad.

My parents, both of them taught me the value of hard work. To Texas, we relocated. Although I knew nothing about basketball, I rapidly developed a passion for it.

My relationship with my faith was significant to me, and I discovered how to use both to improve people’s lives via basketball. From 1993 through 2003, I served as Heritage Christian Academy’s basketball coach and the church’s youth pastor.

During that time, we won four state championships, went independent for the final three years, and were ranked in the top 25 in the nation.

At some point, he switched to playing for Baylor, working with head coach Scott Drew, who took a chance on him. It was God who brought him to Baylor and then to Kansas State, Tang claimed.

Tang served as an assistant and associate head coach at Baylor from 2003 to 2012 when Baylor became a national powerhouse (2017).

Drew attributes Tang’s crucial contribution to Baylor’s transformation into a national powerhouse through its JOY culture (Jesus, Others, Yourself).

In his Twitter bio, Tang describes himself as a “Lover of Jesus.” Together, they transformed the Bears program.

Which had previously been plagued by scandal and NCAA probation, into one of national prominence, as evidenced by the 2021 NCAA Championship, the co-winning of the 2021 and 2022 Big 12 regular-season championships with the University of Kansas, five Sweet 16 appearances, and three Elite Eight appearances. In this season’s NCAA Tournament, Baylor received a No. 1 seed before losing to North Carolina, an 8-seed, in the second round.

I couldn’t be more thrilled to be Kansas State’s next head basketball coach, said Tang. “It is a blessing to have the chance to expand on a basketball program with a long tradition at a prominent university. We are excited to introduce a thrilling brand of basketball to K-State and support our student-athletes in their endeavors to excel both on and off the court.

Gene Taylor, the director of athletics at Kansas State, thinks he has found the right candidate to elevate the team’s men’s basketball program, and he didn’t even have to search outside the Big 12 Conference.

Both KS President Linton and Taylor praised Tang’s moral character, impeccable honesty, and treatment of players—more so than only in terms of basketball.

When asked about his response to Tang’s choice, Drew remarked, “When you see someone excited, you’re excited.” “So the tears started to flow after the hug. A tremendous blessing, as nineteen years, is a long time.

“Because it’s so frequently preached in today’s society to “keep developing, make as much as you can, obtain the highest title (and) be a head coach,” it speaks volumes about his character and loyalty.

He always made it clear to me that he wanted to be the best assistant coach I’ve ever worked with, to be dependable and serve the team, and that’s a large part of why he’s been so successful.”

Green also stated that when asked about the new head coach of the Jayhawks’ intrastate opponents, famed University of Kansas head coach Bill Self was positive.

“He’ll perform admirably. He deserves it, ” I said,” “He waited patiently for the job he believed would be the perfect fit since he earned the chance to be a head coach many years ago.

Self said that he initially brought in one of Tang’s high school players from Heritage Christian while he was Oral Roberts’ head coach.

With a smile, Self added, “I’m pleased for Jerome. “Today, I left him a message.

“What a beautiful day to be a Wildcat, his answering machine had already remarked, and I replied, “I beg to differ, but I am thrilled for you and look forward to spending some time with you.” But it’ll be enjoyable. There will undoubtedly be battles, and it will be competitive.”

Praise also came from Tang’s country of origin. Joseph Lenny Guy, a former national senior men’s basketball coach for Trinidad and Tobago who won four Caribbean Championships, said Tang is an excellent coach who will advance his career with time and at the correct time.

Albert Lee Young, the former manager of the national men’s team, had the utmost respect for Tang’s sincerity as a coach and friend who always volunteered advice and assistance. Both agree that having Coach Tang in charge will benefit the K.S. program.
