Early in the 1960s, Ravenel turned to the Republican party and often ran for office. He was unsuccessful in his bids for mayor of Charleston in 1971, the U.S. House of Representatives in 1971, and the South Carolina State Senate in 1962, 1974, and 1976.

Former State Senator Arthur Ravenel Jr. passed away on Monday at 95, according to his family. From 1953 until 1958, he served as a state legislator for Charleston, Georgetown, and Horry counties. He served as a state senator from 1981 to 1986.

From 1987 until 1995, Arthur Ravenel Jr. served as the U.S. Representative for South Carolina’s first congressional district. He moved back to Columbia in 1997, and from then until 2003, he served as a state senator.
The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, which connects Mount Pleasant and the broader Charleston region and bears his name, may have been one of his most notable accomplishments. In a 2015 interview with News 2, Ravenel claimed that he mainly returned to the South Carolina Senate in 1997 to “find the money for the bridge.”

On March 29, 1927, Arthur Ravenel Jr. was born in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1945 and 1946, he served in the US Marine Corps. He received his degree from the College of Charleston in 1950. Six children were born to him and his first spouse, Louise Rodgers: Suzanne C., Arthur III, Renee, Eva, William, and Thomas. Ravenel wed Jean Elliott Rickenbaker a second time in 1974.
