Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, stated during a speech on Thursday morning at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos that he is unsure whether Russian President Vladimir Putin is still alive.

When asked when the peace talks would begin, he made the comments at the Ukrainian Breakfast, a private gathering. But a video of Mr. Zelensky’s comments has surfaced on Twitter. Leaders in Russia responded by claiming that the president of Ukraine “would prefer neither Russia nor Putin to exist.”

Mr. Zelensky said during the breakfast event: “I’m not sure who to talk to today or what to talk about. I’m not sure if the Russian president—who occasionally appears against a green screen—is the right one. I’m not sure if he is still alive if he is making the decisions, or who else is doing so.”

“How you can tell European leaders one thing and then begin a full-scale invasion of the state the next day baffles me. I’m just not sure who we’re dealing with in this situation. I’m not sure with whom we’re having “peace negotiations” when we declare that “Ukrainska Pravda quotes him as adding.

A severe reaction was given by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov hours following his address. He said, according to Fox News, “It was evident that both Putin and Russia present significant challenges for Zelensky and Ukraine. And Mr. Zelensky would prefer that Russia and Putin did not exist, only from a psychological standpoint.

The sooner he understands that Russia does and will continue to exist, the better for a nation like Ukraine.” Through his remarks, Mr. Zelensky might have poked fun at Mr. Putin, who has been avoiding attending public events lately. Additionally, he canceled his yearly news conference in December.
