In the Cleveland, Ohio, enclave of Shaker Heights, Paul was born on January 26, 1925. He briefly attended Ohio University before joining the Navy and serving as a radio operator during World War II. After finishing his duty, he went home and wed Jackie on December 27, 1949. Before having a son named Scott in 1950, a daughter named Susan in 1953, and another daughter named Stephanie a year later, the couple, who were also actors, focused on their trade.

Paul had difficulty finding work, but he eventually struck it rich when he was offered a couple of roles on Broadway. He met Joanne, another actress while working as an understudy on one of his first gigs, Picnic. Paul and Jackie would eventually divorce in 1958 due to their love affair.
