However, Hurricane Iota, a category 5 storm that struck the island in November 2020, just before Ellie departed for South America, and their inability to agree on their future on the island caused severe conflict.

“Victor and I just got in a huge argument about money. We were sitting here, cheering to, like, rebuild our house. Where did this take such a wrong turn?” Ellie said in a November 2021 episode’s confessional.

Victor walked away from Ellie after their argument as she vented to the cameras. “Got a f–king chip on his shoulder, for sure,” she said. “I was just asking normal, adult conversation questions.”

He entered their still-under-construction home, devastated to the extent that, according to Al Jazeera, 98 percent of Providencia’s infrastructure had been affected.

“Are you guys gonna be OK? You guys wanna talk this out?” a producer asked the couple, as the tension in the room seemed palpable.

Victor spoke first. “Maybe she could just add up the money that I owe her and I would just pay her and then this is over,” he said, hinting that he was ready to call it quits on their relationship. “It seems to me that’s what she wants and that’s what [she’s] worried about all the time: money.”

Ellie rolled her eyes. “That’s what you’re worried about!” she hit back. “You have a complex about it.”

Victor told Ellie that she’s the one who “has a complex about money,” and she laughed. “You were like, worried about so much money. That’s all you’re thinking about, like, money, money, money, money. ‘I’ve been sending you money for two years, for two years,’” he said. “Like, if you’re sending me so much money. Like if you send me millions or something like that. If you send me so much money, I would have a bike or a car. No, I don’t have it. [What] you send me [you can] see is here, on your house.”

Ellie explained that her worry isn’t about the amount of money she’s sent to Victor, but she worried how they would continue to earn a living together in Providencia following the devastating hurricane. Before the disaster, they planned to finish building their home and live on the island while opening up a beach bar where they hoped to get plenty of business from tourists. Since the island would need to be completely rebuilt, Ellie thought it would not be open to tourism for a long time.

“No, you’re not worried about where we actually live, you’re worried about tourism. ‘If tourist doesn’t [come] here, we’re not gonna survive, we not gonna live,’” Victor said. “That’s not the truth! I’ve survived without tourists all my life. You don’t even know anything about this island. You think tourists have been coming here forever? Tourists just started to come here 10 years ago. What we do before 10 years? We survived. You’re just worried about money, money, money, money, money, you know? Money is not all. Remember that.”

Victor volunteered to return the money Ellie provided him after telling her that he believes their argument is primarily about the funds. He continued, “And then it’s over, and leave me to spend my life here.”

Victor suggested that Ellie go back to America alone as she walked away, and she appeared to be thinking about this. “I want to get out of here. Like, I want to disappear from this place miraculously,” she remarked before sobbing.

The following day, once they had time to collect themselves, they expressed regret to one another and appeared dedicated to mending their relationship. Victor even asked Ellie to marry him. He gave her a seashell in place of the ring he had planned to provide her but had lost in the hurricane. Without a doubt, she agreed.
