In 2026, a Formula One car will again bear the Ford name. There were 4 of them.

To create the hybrid powertrain that will be utilized in the company’s 2026 entrants, the carmaker has teamed up with Red Bull.

For Oracle Red Bull Racing and its sister team Scuderia Alpha Tauri, both of which run two cars apiece, Red Bull Ford Powertrains will co-develop the engine.

The action was taken a month after Cadillac announced that it would be collaborating with Andretti Motorsport on a series expansion team entry application, which has not yet been granted.

Max Verstappen, a Red Bull driver, is the two-time defending series champion. Honda created the power unit that the team now employs.

Ford supplied Formula One engines from 1967 through 2004 and amassed 174 victories in the process, placing third all-time despite its prolonged absence. After selling the Jaguar brand in 2005 and rebranding as Red Bull Racing, it last operated a team under that name.

According to Ford Performance Motorsports Global Director Mark Rushbrook, the series will introduce a brand-new car and formula in 2026, creating a new opportunity for Ford to participate.

“The changes that have been made in the sport to provide a technical foundation based on sustainability, based on more electrification in the power unit, really gives us that opportunity for technical contribution and technical learning,” Rushbrook told Fox News Digital. “It’s the right time.”

A more potent electric motor will be coupled with a turbocharged V6 engine, similar to the ones used today, to provide around 470 of the 1,000 horsepower that the system is capable of producing.

Ford will develop its electric production cars, according to Rushbrook, with the experience acquired working on the power control unit, battery cells, and aerodynamics.

Synthetic fuel generated from sequestered carbon will also power the internal combustion engine, resulting in net-zero emissions when burned.

“That’s part of what attracted us to take a serious look at Formula One,” Rushbrook said.

In addition to the race victories, Ford-powered cars have won 10 constructor titles and 13 driver championships. Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart, and Michael Schumacher are just a few drivers who have achieved success for the company.
