How Did He Come To Be Known As “Smokey”?
In 2012, Smokey Robinson stated: “My Uncle Claude was my favorite uncle and also served as my godfather. He and I had a tight relationship.
When I was a young boy, he frequently took me to cowboy movies because I enjoyed them. I was given the cowboy nickname Smokey Joe by him.
So, when I was three years old, I told them it was Smokey Joe instead of William whenever someone asked me what my name was. Before I dropped the Joe part when I was around 12 years old, that’s what everyone called me.
I’ve heard the rumor that he gave me because I’m a Black man with a light complexion, but that’s not true.
