Sen. Rand Paul Staffer Stabbed In Washington

According to police and Sen. Rand Paul’s office, a suspect has been detained after a staff member was stabbed and critically hurt in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.

“This past weekend, a member of my staff was brutally attacked in broad daylight,” Paul, R-Ky, said in a statement to ABC News on Monday, adding, “I ask you to join [wife] Kelley and me in praying for a speedy and complete recovery, and thanking the first responders, hospital staff, and police for their diligent actions.”

The employee’s identity has not been made public by Paul’s office.

The district’s 1300 block of H Street Northeast was the scene of a stabbing on Saturday at about 5:15 p.m., according to a police report obtained by ABC News.

The victim was treated on the scene for “stab wounds” and was seen by a witness “bleeding from the head,” the report states.

One of the two witnesses quoted in the article claimed that the suspect “popped out of the corner” and repeatedly stabbed the Paul employee as they were walking.

A fight between the parties ensued when the victim “was able to grab [the suspect’s] arms” and the witness alongside him tackled the suspect, according to the report. The suspect then left, and the victim and witness fled.

According to the report, the first witness yelled at a second witness about what was happening, and that witness phoned the police while they assisted the victim.

According to court documents, he had admitted to officers that, before the attack, he heard a voice saying it would get him.

Police stated that Paul’s employee was hospitalized “for treatment of life-threatening injuries,” but they did not provide any other details regarding his status.

“We are relieved to hear the suspect has been arrested. At this time, we would ask for privacy so everyone can focus on healing and recovery,” Paul said.
