Turlington joined the worldwide nonprofit CARE in 2005 and has since become the organization’s Advocate for Maternal Health. Turlington is also employed by Product Red as an Ambassador. She went to Swaziland in May 2007 to represent CARE after getting the idea from her mother, a longstanding donor.
As a result of the difficulties she had when giving birth to her first child in 2003, Turlington was motivated to get a Master’s degree in public health after discovering that more than half a million women lose their lives each year due to pregnancy and childbirth-related causes.
In September of 2010, she went on a CARE study tour to Ethiopia to learn more about research being conducted there to lessen the number of women dying while giving birth.
