Richard Roundtree, born on July 9, 1942 and passing away on October 24, 2023, was a well-known American actor. He is often credited as “the first black action hero” for his role as private investigator John Shaft in the film Shaft (1971) and its four sequels (1972–2019).

They had three children together before divorcing in 1998; Roundtree and Ciernia. A lump discovered in Richard’s right breast in 1993 led to the diagnosis of breast cancer. “When I got the news, I was shocked,” he told “USA Today” in 2001. I told myself, “There’s no way I have breast cancer.“

With nominations for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture (1971’s “Shaft”) and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (1998’s “413 Hope St.”), Richard has been nominated for two NAACP Image Awards.
He was nominated for the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Daytime Series “Soap Opera Digest” Award in 1991 for his work on “Generations,” and again in 2010 for his work on the online series “Diary of a Single Mom” he was nominated for the Indie Series Award for Best Performance by a Supporting Actor.
Roundtree was honored by the New Mexico Film Critics with their Glenn Strange Honorary Award in 2021.
