Colombian singer and composer Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, better known simply as Shakira, was born on February 2, 1977. She is a Colombian native and Barranquilla native who has been hailed as the “Queen of Latin Music” for her many musical talents.
At the tender age of 13, she made her recording debut for Sony Music Colombia. Her first two albums, Magia (1991) and Peligro (1993), were commercial flops, but her subsequent albums, Pies Descalzos (1995) and Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998), brought her to notoriety in Hispanic countries.

Shakira Tax Fraud Charges
The Paradise Papers revealed that Shakira was the sole owner and beneficiary of a corporation that transferred $30 million in music rights in November of 2017. The Spanish government started investigating her finances in 2018. Prosecutors would eventually contend that despite claiming the Bahamas to be her legal residence, Shakira spent more than six months residing in Spain between 2012 and 2014.
During that time, she avoided making any tax payments to Spain. It was claimed that she owed the government $13.9 million in taxes from those years. Shakira stated that she had paid off her debt in full, plus interest of $2.8 million. Prosecutors in Spain filed a $7.1 million tax fraud case against Shakira in September 2023. This was an additional fee on top of the taxes paid between 2012–2014.
On November 20, 2023, the first day of her trial, Shakira settled her lawsuit with Spanish tax officials. To affirm her admission of guilt on six counts of failing to pay around $16 million in taxes to the Spanish government for tax years 2012–2014, she checked the “yes” box in the settlement.
Shakira was able to stay out of jail because to the terms of the deal. Instead, she will pay a $8 million fine and serve a three-year suspended sentence. According to the letter of the law, she committed tax fraud.
