Adam Sandler Receives Mark Twain Prize For American Humor

Adam Sandler received the Mark Twain Award for American Comedy on Sunday night at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., surrounded by family members and well-known acquaintances.

Celebrities from the comedy and acting world, including Jennifer Aniston, Chris Rock, Drew Barrymore, and Conan O’Brien, honored the legendary Brooklyn entertainer. Sandler was the target of numerous compliments and humorous comments at the awards ceremony.

Former roommate and director Judd Apatow, Sandler, recalled his early confidence.

“The moment you met him, you knew Adam was going to be a big star,” Apatow said. “And so did Adam.”

Sandler made the joke that the bronze statue of Mark Twain “one day might be the weapon used to bludgeon me in my sleep.” On March 26, CNN will broadcast the award presentation.

At New York University, Sandler, 56, honed his comedic skills before moving to Los Angeles to advance his career. He eventually got a role on “Saturday Night Live” in 1990 and became famous nationwide.

The Hollywood Reporter states that after being sacked from the show, he became a cinematic star and appeared in dozens of films, including “Billy Madison,” “The Wedding Singer,” “The Longest Yard,” “Uncut Gems,” and “Hustle,” making over $4 billion globally. He’s frequently recast his friends in his songs and videos throughout his career.

In a November interview with “CBS Sunday Morning,” Sandler discussed playing unlucky characters, a frequent motif in movies.

“Oh man, I always liked them growing up,” said Sandler. “I liked pulling for somebody who needed something. I relate to all different types of people, but I enjoy playing these guys who are struggling. I like that.”
