After A Flag Football Match At Desert Oasis High School, Ashari Hughes Dies At 16!
During a high school flag football game in Las Vegas, Nevada, a 16-year-old girl collapsed and passed away due to a medical issue.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, sophomore Ashari Hughes, 16, a Desert Oasis High School player, passed out after a home game versus Valley High School on Thursday at around 7:30 p.m. According to the newspaper, she was taken to the hospital and passed away later that evening.
Three days earlier, during a “Monday Night Football” game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills that was broadcast to millions of viewers, safety Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills passed out due to cardiac arrest. Officials claim that Hamlin is now “awake” and improving “remarkably.”
Despite valiant efforts, the 16-year-old Nevada student was not saved.
The girl was her daughter’s teammate, and registered nurse Aphelia Phifer-Hill posted on Facebook on Thursday night about how she hurried onto the field to give the kid CPR.

In her letter, she said, “Today was the first time, in my 26 years of nursing, that I had to administer CPR on a kid.”
According to Phifer-Hill, the kid fainted after the game, and “everyone was panicked” because of the chilly, rainy weather the newspaper stated. Phifer-Hill also said she used an external defibrillator and tried to perform chest compressions.
The statement added, “Her family finally came, but they weren’t at the game. “We were able to establish a heartbeat.” The adolescent was hospitalized and placed on an intubation machine, according to Phifer-Hill, according to the Review-Journal. Following the publication of the story, her post was reportedly removed.
The 16-year-old who died was recalled on Friday for her passion for the game.
“She loved music, dancing, and being around all the people she loved,” the girl’s parents, Enttroda and Twayne Hughes, said in a statement. She referred to football as her true love in life.
On Friday afternoon, online fundraising for Ashari Hughes’ funeral expenses was launched, and in just two hours, more than $2,000 was collected. By Saturday morning, the amount had crossed the $21,000 mark of the $50,000 target.
Desert Oasis Principal Ian Salzman urged parents in an email to the school community on Friday to be aware of how sorrow manifests in kids and to seek help if their kids need therapy or support.
