Ali Wong Early Life

Ali Wong’s mother, Alexandra Dawn Wong, came into this world in San Francisco, California, on April 19, 1982. Ali was born to Adolphus, a Chinese-American anesthesiologist who worked for Kaiser Permanente for 30 years before his death in 2011, and Tam, a social worker from Vietnam who immigrated to the United States in 1960.

Wong served as president of her San Francisco University High School class and has three elder siblings. Ali attended UCLA and majored in Asian-American studies after graduating in 2000. She became a member of the nation’s largest and oldest Asian-American collegiate theater organization, the LCC Theatre Company, while attending UCLA.

Wong also spent one summer helping out at a family camp run by UC Berkeley alums called The Lair of the Golden Bear. After receiving a Fulbright scholarship to study in Vietnam in 2005, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Asian-American studies. As Ali stated in an interview with “The Washington Post” in 2012, “I hated it because no one understood me.”

My Vietnamese skills are lacking, and I would only be able to convey around 5% of my intended meaning. I felt really alone and depressed since no one could understand my jokes or references. At that moment, I made up my mind, “I need to return home and attempt to make a living doing this.”

Ali Wong Personal Life

Ali wed Justin Hakuta, VP of GoodRx, on November 27, 2014. They met at a wedding in 2010. Inventor Ken Hakuta, who presented “The Dr. Fad Show” in the late ’80s and early ’90s, is Justin’s father. Before Ali and Justin filed for divorce in April 2022, they welcomed children Nikki (born December 2017) and Mari (born November 2015).

Wong has discussed her loss before having her daughters openly, saying that making jokes about it helped her deal with the pain. According to Ali, who spoke about her miscarriage in her debut special, “It was very taboo for women to talk about miscarriage and it still kind of is.” In 2019, Ali told “The Guardian” that this continued.

People approach me on the street and express their gratitude for helping them feel better about having a loss; this happens even now. Despite Wong and Hakuta’s divorce filing in April 2022, they are amicable and Hakuta is still Wong’s tour manager. Actor Bill Hader and Wong had a brief romance in late 2022, and by April of 2023, they were back together.
