On Christmas Eve of 1955, Gilyard was born to Barbara and Clarence Alfred Gilyard Sr., a U.S. Officer in the Air Force. Among his family of six, Gilyard was the second. Gilyard’s parents met and started a family in New Orleans, but he spent his childhood on military stations in Hawaii, Texas, and Florida.
He was brought up predominantly Lutheran but converted to Catholicism in his twenties. Gilyard spent his teenage years in the San Bernardino neighborhood of Rialto, where he went to Eisenhower High. The top student in his class, he graduated from high school in 1974 and then spent a year as an Air Force Academy cadet before leaving to attend Sterling College.
The collegiate football player also joined the Sigma Chi fraternity. He was awarded a tennis scholarship but did not use it, instead choosing to forego his education. During his high school years at home with his parents, Gilyard was obsessed with women, booze, and occasionally narcotics.
In response to parental pressure, he and a friend uprooted Long Beach, California. As he pursued a career in acting, he worked as a waiter while studying at California State University, Long Beach. He graduated from California State University, Dominguez Hills, with a bachelor’s degree.
