Dariush Mehrjui Death: A Well-Known Iranian Filmmaker Was Shot to Death at His Home!

Dariush Mehrjui Death

Police said that on Saturday, the well-known Iranian director Dariush Mehrjui and his wife were murdered in their house outside of Tehran.

According to his assistant Hanif Soroori, on Saturday night, Mr. Mehrjui, 83, who is regarded as one of the pioneers of Iran’s new wave cinema movement, and his wife Vahideh Mohammadifar, 54, a screenwriter and costume designer, were found dead in their home in Karaj, in Alborz Province. He said that their necks had been slashed.

Alborz police chief Hamid Hadavand told the Iranian student news agency ISNA that the murders’ motivations were still a mystery. A report from the Tasnim News Agency said that some stolen gold items had been found. Mr. Mehrjui has influenced a new wave of Iranian filmmakers with his in-depth looks at modern Iranian culture.

The Shah of Iran helped finance the production of one of his most famous pictures, “The Cow” (1969), which depicts a poor farmer’s affection for his cow and his agony following her death. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the revolutionary leader, was in exile in France in the months leading up to the revolution of 1979, when Mr. Mehrjui videotaped him.

Mr. Mehrjui’s post-revolutionary films featured well-heeled Tehranites debating philosophical and economic issues amongst themselves. In “Hamoun,” one of his most influential pictures, an academic in his mid-30s suffers a mental collapse as his marriage falls apart.

The door was pushed open, according to Mr. Soroori, who was contacted at the site of the crime. According to him, despite being in a gated neighborhood, the house has a somewhat remote location, and no witnesses have come forward. Mr. Mehrjui did not raise any eyebrows on the political scene. Nobody knew for sure if he had any adversaries. The authorities have stated that an investigation has begun.
