David Foster Career
Foster was the band’s keyboardist in the musical group Skylark. Their 1973 single “Wildflower” was a top ten hit thanks to the efforts of record producer Eirik Wangberg. Foster stayed in Los Angeles when the band broke up and collaborated with Jay Graydon to form the band Airplay. He began contributing to other people’s albums as a writer, producer, and arranger in addition to performing his own songs.
For instance, he was a studio player, arranger, and co-writer for Earth, Wind & Fire’s album “I Am” (1979). Foster co-wrote the 1980 Best R&B Song Grammy winner “After the Love Has Gone” alongside Graydon and Bill Champlin. It wasn’t until the 1980s that he stopped producing and writing songs.
Numerous albums by Chicago, as well as “Forever” (1985) and “Heart to Heart” (1982) by Kenny Loggins, and “What About Me?” (1984) and “The Heart of the Matter” (1985) by Kenny Rogers are examples of his work during this time. He penned songs for the movies “The Secret of My Success” (1987) and “Stealing Home” (1988) and scored the score for “St. Elmo’s Fire” (1985).
As an added bonus, he also wrote the song “Winter Games,” which was used as the official anthem of the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Foster established his own boutique label, 143 Records, in 1995 as a cooperative venture with Warner Brothers. The Corrs, an Irish folk-rock band, were one of the first performers signed by 143 Records.
The label was sold back to Warner in 1997, and Foster took a position as senior vice president at Warner. Foster’s productions in the 1990s included “The Power of the Dream,” written with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds for the 1996 Summer Olympics, as well as the Toni Braxton and Celine Dion versions of “Un-Break My Heart” and Brandy’s “Have You Ever?”, both by Diane Warren.
