David McCallum Early Years
On September 19, 1933, in Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland, David McCallum was born as David Keith McCallum Jr. Dorothy, his mother, played the cello, and David Sr., his father, played the violin in an orchestra. Young brothers David and Iain were uprooted from their native Canada by their parents and taken to London so that their dad could take over as conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
McCallum’s mother brought him back to Scotland during the war, where they stayed with her sister until they were able to buy a house near Loch Lomond. David, an accomplished oboist, attended University College School in London on a full oboe scholarship.
His interest in playing quickly blossomed, and he told the “The Scotsman” newspaper, “I played The Little Prince in Shakespeare’s ‘King John,’ at one of those local things where people perform skits and songs.” A standing ovation was given to my performance as the small prince getting his eyes taken out by the evil guy.
Never more than eight years old. In response, I said, “Hey, hey, hey, this is kinda cool!” Not sure if this was a deliberate thinking or not, but I finally felt at home when I was on stage, surrounded by an audience.
McCallum quit school and was called up for National Service the year after he made an appearance in a Play and Pageant Union production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at age 17. In 1954, he was promoted to lieutenant while serving in the British Army with the 3rd Battalion, The Middlesex Regiment. David served in the armed forces, and then went on to study at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
