David Muir was raised in Onondaga Hill and was born into a Catholic household in Syracuse, New York. In addition to six nieces and three nephews, Muir has two younger step-siblings and two younger siblings.

He received his diploma from Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School in May 1991 before enrolling in the nearby Ithaca College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in May 1995.

Muir served as a reporter and anchor for WTVH-TV in Syracuse, New York, from 1994 to 2000. Following the 1995 killing of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Muir reported from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Israel, and the Gaza Strip, earning him top prizes from the Radio-Television News Directors Association.

Muir was a reporter and anchor for WCVB television in Boston from 2000 to 2003. For his work tracing the movements of the hijackers responsible for the September 11 attacks, he received the National Headliner Award, the Associated Press Award, and the regional Edward R. Murrow Award. He was honored for his reporting and news anchoring by the Associated Press.

Muir began working for ABC News in August 2003 as the World News Now overnight news program host. He also took over as the host of World News This Morning on ABC News (America This Morning). Muir was the World News Saturday anchor from June 2007 onward. He co-anchored the news magazine Primetime in 2006 and, on occasion, followed.
World News with David Muir, which aired on weekends starting in February 2012, was hosted by Muir. An increase in the ratings of the Saturday evening programs has been unofficially attributed to Muir. Muir was allowed to co-anchor ABC’s 20/20 with Elizabeth Vargas in March 2013.
Muir was inside the New Orleans Superdome when Hurricane Katrina landed in September 2005. He remained in New Orleans to cover the developing humanitarian situation. As Muir and his photographer wade through chest-deep water several blocks to find patients stranded inside the hospital, Muir’s reports highlighted the deteriorating conditions within the Convention Center and Charity Hospital.
In October 2006, Muir covered the Israeli conflict with Hezbollah from the Israeli-Lebanese border. Muir covered the Hamas takeover in Gaza in March 2007 by reporting from there. After the most significant earthquake to hit Peru in more than 20 years, Muir was sent there in October 2007.
Honors
Muir advised graduates to utilize their voices at his commencement speech at Ithaca College in May 2011 in New York. The institution conferred an honorary Doctor of Letters degree and the Jessica Savitch Award of Distinction for Excellence in Journalism upon Muir, an alumnus, on March 13, 2015.
