In his first two years in the NFL, he led the league in running each times. James, in his first year as a professional, won the rushing title. He departed the Indianapolis Colts, for whom he had rushed for more than 9,226 yards, in March of 2006. He was inducted into the Indianapolis Colts’ Ring of Honor on September 23, 2012.

James’s first day with his new squad, the Arizona Cardinals, was March 23, 2006. At the beginning of 2007, he had already accumulated more career rushing yards than anybody else. His 100-yard rushing games for Arizona since 1998 have seen him average 4.7 yards per carry. The next game, the Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Eagles 32-25 thanks in part to his 73 yards rushing.

On August 24, 2009, he did, however, sign with the Seattle Seahawks. He took over for T. J. Duckett as the team’s starting running back. He left the NFL on July 26, 2011, per his retirement announcement. Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium hosted James’ induction ceremony into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 7, 2021. At his enshrinement, he identified himself as Convict No. 336.
