THE NEW YORK In “American Idol,” there is never a shortage of incredible talent or motivational tales.
Elijah McCormick is one of those competitors that makes you cry while inspiring optimism in your soul.
Outstanding soloist from North Carolina, McCormick was only three hours removed from receiving his high school diploma when he narrowly avoided death in a head-on accident on June 8, 2019.
He underwent numerous surgeries, dialysis, and a feeding tube and had to relearn how to walk and talk during his 79 days in the hospital. When he could speak again, his first inquiry was, “Mom, can I sing?”
Elijah was given the moniker “Golden Child” by the medical staff at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill due to the blond coloring of his hair tips.
We Ani, the youngest adult division winner at Apollo’s Amateur Night, is also trying out this week.

We Ani was raised in Paterson, New Jersey, but was born in Harlem. She started singing at 4 and went to the Harlem School of the Arts.
“My father told me if I wanted to get into music that I had to do the work,” she explained to Eyewitness News entertainment reporter Sandy Kenyon. “Just like an athlete, you gotta be in the gym. You gotta practice, and that’s exactly what I tried to do.”
She stands out during the auditions partly due to the striking contrast between her singing and speaking voice.
This week, Olivia Soli claims she knew she wanted to act at 5. She started creating songs at age 11. She currently performs in Los Angeles as a college student, singing the national anthem at a Los Angeles Clippers game, among other things.
Adin Boyer, another candidate from Southern California, amassed millions of TikTok views in 2020 with his musical comedy videos.
