Officials said two unoccupied homes overlooking a canyon in Draper, Utah, collapsed off their foundations Saturday, forcing the evacuation of two adjacent residences.
City building officials labeled two clifftop homes “unfit for human habitation” due to “earth shifting that resulted in sliding and breaks in the homes’ foundations,” according to a Facebook post by city officials.
Officials stated the city has been following up with the developer on engineering assessments of the area’s stability for months.
“With the snow pack melting and creating changes in conditions, other homes in the neighborhood will be evaluated for safety concerns,” according to the Facebook post. “At this time, only the two adjacent homes are being evacuated.”

Following the slide, Draper officials blocked two public trails.
“Everyone needs to avoid the area. Do not go to the neighborhood where the homes slid. Only residents allowed,” local officials stated. “We are grateful that everyone is safe.”
Draper is located around 20 miles south of Salt Lake City.
