The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office in Sidney, Ohio, published surveillance footage on July 31 showing 22-year-old James Rayl approaching a home and repeatedly banging on the front door, as reported by WDTN. Rayl’s ex-girlfriend (also 22) did not want to see him, and voices could be heard ordering him to go.
As Rayl bursts through the front door, shots ring out, and a man’s voice can be heard shouting that he is armed. Following his three gunshot wounds, Rayl staggered into the driveway and collapsed. Shortly after, a bystander can be heard saying, “he’s dead” and “he’s shot” on camera, just before the police arrive.
Law enforcement officials reported that Rayl was pronounced dead at the site. As reported by FOX News, the man’s daughter broke up with Rayl over 18 months ago. Between 11 a.m. and noon, Rayl reportedly showed up at her residence after leaving a voicemail on her phone the night before. According to Shelby County Prosecutor Tim Sell, the grand jury decided not to indict the father in Rayl’s killing because of the “Stand Your Ground” and “Castle Doctrine” laws of the state, which protect homeowners who use deadly force when they feel threatened.
