She first appeared on screen in the 1978 comedy Animal House, then had a small part in the 1979 romantic comedy-drama Manhattan directed by Woody Allen, co-starred in the 1979 coming-of-age film The Wanderers, and co-starred opposite Al Pacino in the 1980 William Friedkin crime thriller Cruising.

In Carrollton, Illinois, Karen Jane Allen came into this world on October 5, 1951. Ruth was a professor at the institution, and Carroll was an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
The family relocated quite a bit because Carroll had to move for work. Karen reflected on her childhood, saying, “I grew up moving almost every year and so I was always the new kid in school and always, in a way, was deprived of ever really having any lasting friendships.”
She attended DuVal High School in Maryland and then spent two years at New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology, where she and her two sisters both received their degrees in art and design.
In her latter years, Karen was a member of the Washington Theatre Laboratory and an undergraduate at George Washington University in Washington, DC. After joining Shakespeare & Company in Massachusetts in 1974, she moved back to New York City in 1977 to study acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute under David Gideon.
