She gained fame as a tattoo artist on the four-season TLC reality show LA Ink, which debuted on August 7, 2007, in the US. Even though she began classical piano lessons at the tender age of 6, her musical tastes soon shifted toward punk bands like the Misfits and the Ramones. After Kat Von D had been working as a tattoo artist for a while, she made an appearance in the 2005–2006 season of Miami Ink. The opportunity presented itself to her when production personnel decided to cast Von D. in lieu of another prominent cast member who hurt his arm. She returned for a third season as a regular cast member after some time had passed.
Kat Von D opted to leave the tattoo parlor following a dispute with Ami James, who was also a co-owner. Kat Von D was offered the chance to feature in her own reality TV program, LA Ink, after she left Miami Ink. Her struggles as owner of High Voltage Tattoo, a tattoo parlor in Hollywood, were the center of the episode.
During filming for LA Ink, Kat Von D tattooed 400 people in one day, breaking a previous record. The show quickly gained popularity. The program was cancelled after its fourth season in 2011 because Von D ultimately chose not to continue with it.
