According to authorities, the de@th of a man seen on camera being strangled on a New York City subway train on Monday afternoon has been determined to be a homicide.
Officials named the victim as Jordan Neely, and the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner verified to CBS News on Wednesday that the cause of de@th was judged to be “compression of neck” or a “chokehold.”
Neely was shown on camera being held in a chokehold by another man for many minutes by CBS New York. According to the New York City Authorities Department, the suspect in Neely’s choking incident was questioned by authorities before being let go.
Charges in the case may or may not be brought, according to the police.
“This is a solemn and serious matter that ended in the tragic loss of Jordan Neely’s life. As part of our rigorous ongoing investigation, we will review the Medical Examiner’s report, assess all available video and photo footage, identify and interview as many witnesses as possible, and obtain additional medical records,” the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

In a statement, Wednesday, Rev. Al Sharpton, the founder of the National Action Network, demanded that the District Attorney and police “investigate this horrific incident as a potential case of manslaughter – if not m*rder. Thirty years ago, I fought the Bernard Goetz case and we cannot end up back to a place where vigilantism is tolerable. It wasn’t acceptable then and it cannot be acceptable now.”
According to the NYPD, Neely was 30 years old and the accused chokehold victim was 24. According to sources, the 24-year-old is thought to be a Marine.
According to the authorities who spoke to CBS New York, he allegedly detained Neely because he behaved strangely aboard a train in a station in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood.
According to the NYPD, Neely was unresponsive when police arrived and were taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced de@d.
According to Sharpton, Neely was homeless at the time of his passing.
“We hope the family of Jordan Neely will come forward so NAN can ensure he is funeralized properly and decently,” he said.
