Matthew Stajan (born December 19, 1983) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre. The Toronto Maple Leafs picked him at pick 57 in the second round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. In 2004, Stajan debuted with the Maple Leafs, and he remained with the team until 2010, when he was traded to the Calgary Flames. Stajan finished his career with the German professional ice hockey league’s EHC Red Bull München.

Stajan is of Slovenian heritage; both of his sets of grandparents emigrated to Canada in the 1950s. Mike and his uncle took over the fire door manufacturing business begun by Mike’s grandfather, Ludvic.
Matt is an extremely versatile ice hockey player who started out with the Toronto Red Wings of his hometown league, the Greater Toronto Hockey League. In homage to his uncle Robert, who also wore the number 14 during his professional hockey career, Stajan wore that jersey number throughout his youth career and with the Maple Leafs.
Between the years 2000 and 2003, Matt played for the Belleville Bulls of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he racked up 206 points in 182 games and was named to the OHL’s Eastern Conference All-Star Team.

Stajan met his future wife, Katie, after relocating to Toronto from Belleville Bulls, Ontario. Katie was the kind of ladies Stajan had been yearning for and soon both got married. Emerson was born to Katie and her husband on March 3, 2014, however he did not survive the first few days of his life.
The couple had another child a year later; this time they honored their first child by naming him Elliot. Stajan and his wife Katie hosted a fundraiser called “A Night Under the Stars” after the death of their first child, raising more than $100,000 for the neonatal critical care unit at Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre.
