Matt Ulrich death

On Wednesday, 41-year-old Matt Ulrich passed away. He had previously won Super Bowl XLI with the Indianapolis Colts. The official cause of death is unknown at this time. Jim Irsay, owner of the Colts, made the announcement.

“I am heartbroken to hear of the passing of Matt Ulrich. Matt was with us only two seasons, but left his mark on many,” Irsay posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Great guy, I hear he was a great dad — and he was a Super Bowl champ. My prayers to his family.”

Ulrich, a native of the Chicago suburbs, has been playing football since he was a teenager. He was a star offensive guard for the Northwestern Wildcats, his local team. He made it to the Iron Cats three times and even captained the 2004 squad. After being undrafted out of Northwestern in 2005, Ulrich signed with the Colts and made the team out of training camp.

Ten games saw him suit up at offensive guard. Ulrich was asked how it felt to beat the New England Patriots and advance to the Super Bowl in 2019.

“One of the best days outside the four of my four children’s births and my wedding,he told Montana Sports. “One of the best days of my life was just knowing we punched the ticket to the Super Bowl.” On February 4, 2007, Ulrich played in his last NFL game, as the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Chicago Bears 29-17 to win the Super Bowl.

“I had to remind myself to take one moment for myself,” Ulrich said. “It was good advice I got from someone that if you do win it, take that last moment to look back at the tunnel and just look at the scoreboard, look at the field and just know you’re at the pinnacle of sports.”

Ulrich was the chief growth officer and a partner at Profitable Ideas Exchange, in addition to serving as a player advisor for the Harvard Football Players Health Study. At the time of his passing, he was also the head coach for Mountain Edge Athletics in Bozeman, Montana. There are four sons and a wife left behind by Ulrich.
